Canvas (myCourses): How to convert Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes

Summary

This article explains the multiple ways to convert Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes.  The quizzes can be converted during the course copy option or using options that copy only quizzes.  If you have already copied your course you can use one of the option below to "recopy" the Classic Quizzes only and select the option to convert them to New Quizzes.  

Note:  Classic Quiz Surveys are converted to New Quizzes but are not designated as a Survey type.  You will need to rebuild the survey in New Quizzes as a graded or non-graded survey.  Classic Quiz Practice quizzes are converted to New Quizzes and will be set as Zero points.

Note:  Question Banks are converted to Item Banks during the any of the copy or import/export and migrate options.  The quizzes associated with Question Banks will maintain the same settings.

Task:  How to copy your course and convert Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes

If you want to copy your course and convert Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes at the same time, then follow these instructions. The course copy option is found in the course Settings under the "Import Course Content" button.  These instruction also include how to convert Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes.

Instructions

Step 1 - Select the course into which you would like to import content.

Step 2 - In the course menu on the left, select Settings .

Step 3 - Select " Import Course Content " from the right-hand menu.

Step 4 - In the Content Type drop down menu, select the " Copy a Canvas course ".

Step 5 - In the "Select a course" field, search for your course by typing the course name into the field or selecting a course from the drop down menu. (Be sure to click the " Include completed courses " radio button if you wish to copy content from a course from previous semester.)

Step 6 - Select the option to copy either all content or specific content. (If you select specific content you need to select the Import button to bring up the Select content option) See Copy Specific Content from one course to another course for more details.

Step 7 - Click the "Convert content to New Quizzes".   (This will also convert Question Banks to Item Banks)

Step 8 - Optional Step: Select the adjust dates option, if you are copying a course from a previous semester. See Course Copy - Adjust Dates for more details.

Step 9 - Click the Import button.

Step 10 - A message will appear that the copy process has started. When it is finished you will see a "Complete" message.

Step 11 - Go to the Course Menu links to see your course content that has been copied.  Select the Quizzes link to view the New Quizzes.

 

 

Task: Use Select Specific content to copy only Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes

If you have already copied your courses including all the Classic Quizzes and you'd like to convert all the Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes, use the Select Specific Content and re-copy Classic Quizzes and select the option to convert to New Quizzes.  All Classic Quizzes in the destination course will be overwritten and converted to New Quizzes. 

Instructions

Step 1 - Follow the above instructions on how to copy a course, at Step 7 select the option to copy Specific Course content.

Step 2 - Select the option Select Specific Content.  (The option to select Specific content appears after you select the Import button)

Step 3 - Click the "Convert content to New Quizzes".   (This will also convert Question Banks to Item Banks)

Step 4 - Select the Import button.

Step 5 - Under Current Jobs, select the Select Content. This opens a list of your course content for you to select

Step 6 - Select the Arrow  to expand the folder to show the content and then select the Classic Quizzes you want to copy.

Step 7 - Optional Step: Select the adjust dates option, if you are copying a course from a previous semester. See Course Copy - Adjust Dates for more details.

Step 8 - Click the Import button.

Step9 - Once the import has completed go the Quizzes and Item Banks to see the results.

 

Task: Export Classic Quizzes and Import as New Quizzes

These instructions explain how to use the export quiz option and import as New Quizzes.  If you have existing Classic Quizzes, they will be converted to New Quizzes.  These steps can be used if you have already copied your course and have existing Classic Quizzes.  The imported New Quizzes will overwrite the existing Classic Quizzes. 

Instructions

Step 1 - In the course menu click Settings.

Step 2 - On the course settings page click Export Course Content in the right sidebar menu.

Step 3 - Select Export Type as "Quiz"

Step 4 - Select check box option next to All Quizzes.

Step 5 - Once the export is finished, the export package will be linked at the top page. 

Step 6 - Download the quiz export file. 

Import Quiz QTI file

Step 1 - In the course menu click Settings.

Step 2 - On the course settings page click Import Course Content in the right sidebar menu.

Step 3 - Select Content Type "QTI .zip file

Step 4 - In the Source field select the exported Quiz file that you download

Step 5 - Select the Option to Convert content to All Quizzes.

Step 6 - Select the Add to Import Queue

Step 7 - Once the import as completed go to Quizzes and Item Banks to view the results.

 

Task:  How to Migrate one Classic Quiz to New Quizzes

Instructions

The Migrate option converts a single Classic Quiz to a New Quizzes and is done in the Quizzes index page. The original Classic Quiz is retained and can be deleted later.  New Quizzes will be unpublished.   The quiz settings and available dates and due dates will remain the same.

Step 1 - Select the Quizzes link. course into which you would like to import content.

Step 2 - Locate the Classic Quizzes and on the ride side select the 3 dots to open the menu.

Step 3 - Select " Migrate"

Step 4 - The New Quizzes will appear and the Classic Quizzes is retained.

 

Outcome

Users will understand how to copy Classic Quizzes and convert them to New Quizzes either during a course copy or copying only quizzes
