Choosing virtual files or selective sync
Quick tip: use virtual files for occasional or large files you access online, and selective sync for critical or regularly used content you may need anytime.
When choosing between virtual files and selective sync, consider how often you’ll need the files and whether you’ll have reliable internet access.
- Virtual files are ideal if you want to see your entire Nextcloud folder without using local disk space, since files download only when you open them — but this requires an internet connection at the moment you need the file.
- Selective sync is a better choice for files you use frequently or will need offline, as it fully downloads chosen folders to your device and keeps them available even without internet access.
- For optimal performance, sync only files and folders you’ll need to access regularly.
