Summary

This article contains information to assist Client Services techs when helping customers with their Oracle/SQL database passwords.

Regular Banner Admin Page passwords do not expire because users connect using SSO. Users who require access directly to the database must maintain their Oracle database password independently from other credentials.

Note: Oracle password rules changed in early 2026 - the minimum length is now 15 characters, maximum 30 characters.  This means that the algorithm the Business Application Security Team uses to set a temp password has been updated.  See Banner Oracle and Workflow Passwords in Team Sharepoint for new default password(s) (as of Mar. 6, 2026).

Changing Oracle / SQL Database Passwords

Users with Oracle/SQL database access to banner have a special process for changing their password. This Banner Oracle Password is also used for AppMan (Banner Student), and for Toad access.

  • This kind of message can apply to any of the Banner Databases.
  • When it is time for user to change their Oracle Database password (independent of their regular USNH password) they may receive an email: see example text below.
  • The email text should include the database name, so you know for sure which database the email message refers to.
  • Users may also use this form to update their Banner Oracle Password manually whenever they want to, such as after they have changed their USNH password.

If they call needing help, these are the steps.  User should:

Step 1 - Log into Banner 9 - document in the ticket which Banner database they are logging into

Step 2 - Search for the GUAPSWD form

Step 3 - Fill out the form to change/update their Oracle database password (screen shot below).

If that still doesn’t work, send ticket to ET&S - Business Application Security Team. Be sure Title of ticket includes the Banner database they are trying to access (e.g. Student Production databases: PROD and PSC1; or Test databases: SETI and TEST)

Ticket will come back with password noted like "G" or "T" or some other letter. See Banner Oracle and Workflow Passwords in Team Sharepoint for default password(s) as set by the Business Application Security Team.

  • Note: Oracle password rules changed in early 2026 - the minimum length is now 15 characters, maximum 30 characters.  This means that the algorithm the Business Application Security Team uses to set a temp password has been updated (as of Mar. 6, 2026).

Sample Email and Form

Banner Student "PROD" Example Email

sent to user when Oracle password is nearing 180 days old (this example is for Banner Student "PROD" database):

"Your Oracle password for the UNH Banner SIS production database (PROD) is about to expire. Please be sure to change it so that is doesn’t disrupt any of your daily processing. This is not your Banner 9 password (same as AD credentials). This is for your direct Oracle database account and is for any work that you do directly in the database or via AppMan.

If you know your current database password, it can be changed at the GUAPSWD page using Banner 9 for PROD. If you require assistance, please contact the Technology Help Desk.

Thank you"

GUAPSWD Form in Banner 9

(this example was in the old database "BPRD" for Banner Finance/HR, but the screen should be similar):

  • Oracle User ID = username (usually already filled in)
  • Oracle Password = old password
  • New Oracle Password = new password
  • Verify Password = repeat new password
  • Database = accept whatever is there, no input needed
