Summary
This tip is for anyone using the web version of Xtender, and who has security privileges to add annotations to a document. In Xtender, you can mark up a document using the annotation toolbar. With these tools, you are able to add typewritten or handwritten notes, add a rubber stamp, or highlight items of interest. These annotations are saved as a separate layer -- think of it as a transparency on top of the original document. This means that the document can be viewed or printed with or without the annotations.
How-To
Task: Add notes or other annotations to a document.
Instructions
Note: Annotations may only be made on PDFs and picture files. They cannot be made on "foreign files" (for example: Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
To add a typed note to an image:
- With the appropriate document open, click the Text button on the Annotation toolbar.
- Click on the document in the spot where you’d like your note to appear. The Annotation Text Editor appears.
- In the Annotation Text Editor, type your note.
Note: If you would like the note to simply appear as an icon on the document, select the Display as icon checkbox.
- Click the OK button to close the editor and return to the document. The note appears at the spot where you clicked in step 2.
- To save your note, click the Save button.
To add a handwritten note to an image:
- With the appropriate document open, click the Freehand button on the Annotation toolbar.
Note: If the Freehand button isn’t displayed, you may need to switch to it from another tool, such as the Line, Arrow, or Polyline. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of the tool to see the tools
- To select a color for the handwritten note, click the Color button and select a color.
- To change the width of the line, click the Line Width button and select a width.
- Click on the document and begin writing.
- To save your note, click the Save button.
To highlight:
- With the appropriate document open, click the Highlight button on the Annotation toolbar.
- Click on the document. Drag the mouse pointer up or down to highlight.
- To save the highlights, click the Save button.
To add a rubber stamp to an image:
- With the appropriate document open, click the Rubber Stamp button on the Annotation toolbar.
- Choose the rubber stamp you'd like to use from the list.
- Click on the document in the location where you'd like to put the stamp.
Note: If the stamp ends up in the wrong place, you can select it (with the Select tool) and drag it to a different location.
- To save the rubber stamp on your document, click the Save button.
To delete an annotation:
- With the appropriate document open, click the Select tool and then click on the annotation.
- With the annotation selected, click the Delete button on the Annotation toolbar.
- The annotation will be deleted.
Note: There won’t be an "are you sure?" message. If you really need to undo the deletion you just did, use the Cancel Changes button. This button will undo all changes made since the last time you saved, which means it may undo more changes than you intend.
To release any of the annotation tools:
- Click the Select button on the Annotation toolbar.
Outcome
You should be able to add notes or other annotations to a document.
