Summary:
This article outlines the steps a user with Canvas administrative rights can take in order to restore (undelete) content that has been deleted from a course within myCourses.
Content:
The undelete functionality can be used when a faculty member reports that they “accidentally” deleted a content item from a course. This could be a document, page, announcements, rubric or an assessment such as a quiz, discussion board, assignment. Restoring course content is less complicated then restoring assessments especially if there are student submissions.
There is always a delete date associated to an item, which will help discern the correct item to restore. See the steps below for how to restore steps and the more complicated steps for locating and restoring student submissions.
The ATST team can perform the majority of the restore process. The Academic Application Admin team may need to get involved if there is missing student submissions that will require having Canvas checking their technical logs . The restore process is conducted by the ATST on behalf of the instructor of record. This process is not provided to Faculty or student workers.
Basic steps for restoring content
- Log into myCourses by Canvas
- Navigate to the Course in question
- Once on the home page of the course, in the browsers URL address bar, type the following after the course #, "/undelete"
- Course URL: https://mycourses.unh.edu/courses/####
- Course URL after: https://mycourses.unh.edu/courses/####/undelete
- This provides a list of all content that has been deleted from the course.
- Locate the name of the item provided by the instructor.
- Simply click "Restore" to add any of this content back to the course.
Steps for locating and restoring student submissions
Student submissions are not restored using the "undelete" process. But all may not be not lost, as the student submissions might be located in either Canvas Beta or Canvas Test. What student data can be located in the Canvas Beta or Canvas Test depends on the Canvas refresh cycle and when the specific assessment was deleted.
- Canvas Beta updates weekly on Saturday
- Canvas Test every 3rd Saturday
Since there is no direct process to copy student submissions and grades from Canvas Beta or Canvas Test into Canvas Production, then the data might be able to be available to download and share with the instructor.
How to locate and download student submissions.
Log into Canvas Beta and Canvas Test to locate the student submissions. Locate the course and the assignment to determine if there are student submissions.
Steps for downloading Assignments and Grades
Steps for sharing Discussion posts and Quiz submissions
There is no way to download or export Discussion posts and Quiz submissions. If the instructor needs these submissions, then contact the instructor about what they need and options on sharing it with the instructor. Suggestions for resolution are taking screenshots or having the instructor access Test or Beta to read the submissions in order to provide a grade.
