Task: Export a Classic Quiz Question Bank and import into an Item Bank in New Quizzes

Task: Export a Classic Quiz Question Bank and import into an Item Bank in New Quizzes

What is different or new with banks?

  • Question banks are called Item banks in New quizzes.
  • Item banks are owned by the person who created the bank or who migrated it.
  • Item banks can be shared with other teachers or TAs.

How does migration work?

  • Because there is no direct way to export a question bank directly to an item bank, the question banks must first be added to the classic quiz
  • Each classic quiz that contains the questions from the bank must be exported individually
  • Do not create Item banks prior to importing them because Canvas will automatically create the bank.  Also, you can’t import into an existing item bank.
  • The questions in each quiz will be imported into their own Item Bank.

Now that you have added your question bank questions to the quiz, you can export that Classic Quiz directly into a New Quizzes Item Bank.

Instructions:

Export the Old Quiz:

  1. In the course menu, click Settings
  2. On the course settings page, click Export Course Content in the right sidebar menu.
  3. On the export screen, select Quizzes and deselect the option next to all quizzes. Select the desired quiz and click Export. Once the export is finished, the export package will be linked at the top page. (Only Classic Quizzes will be exported)
  4. Click the New Export link to download each quiz export file. The default name of the export package will only include the name of the course.
  5. You may wish to edit the name when saving to include the quiz name.  If you export multiple quizzes, then all the export quiz files will have the same name so it may be helpful to change the file name but not the extension.

Import into Item Bank:

  1. Go to the Course Menu list, select Item Banks.  This takes you directly to the Item Banks page.  (Alternatively, you could access the Item Banks from the build area of a New Quiz.)
  2. On the Item Bank screen select the +Bank to create a new item bank. Enter a bank name and select Create Bank. (Any name is OK, because the name of the item bank will change to the name of the quiz you exported.)
  3. Click the title of the bank to view the bank.
  4. On the upper right corner select the 3 dots and select Import Content. (You cannot import questions into a bank that already contains questions)
  5. In the dialog box that appears click Browse and locate an export package for the quiz you downloaded.
  6. Click Import. This will begin the import process. Continue this process for each quiz you have exported.
  7. Edit the questions as needed. Kaltura videos will need to be re-added
  8. Once you have imported the item banks, you can create quizzes with randomized group sets from the item banks. Review the guides listed below.

How to share your Item Bank with other faculty or TAs in your course:

  1. Select the New Quizzes in the course menu to access the Item Bank.
  2. Select the Item Banks button.
  3. Next to the Item Bank you want to share, select the +Share link
  4. In the Share With field, enter the name or UNH login ID of the person you are sharing with.
  5. Select the Add button. The name will appear in the Currently shared with list.
  6. Select Done to close the window.

Outcome:

You will be able to export Classic Quizzes, import them as New Quizzes, and share Item Banks with other faculty or TAs in your course.
