How-To

Task: To Optimize Windows 10 Wireless Settings

Two settings that are specific to a computer’s wireless network interface card (NIC) can be adjusted to optimize performance on USNH wireless networks. The settings to target are 802.11 Wireless Mode and the Preferred Band. Unfortunately, the exact layout of these settings is specific to the device manufacturer, but below are screen shots of one example to help guide you.

Ideally your device will prefer the latest 802.11 “Wireless Mode” 802.11ax or 802.11ac. Older standards (like 802.11n) will impact your network experience.

Likewise, your device should prefer the 5GHz band.  Devices using the 2.4GHz band not only suffer performance themselves but also impact the performance of devices around them.

Instructions

Step 1 - Navigate to Control Panel >> All Control Panel Items >> Network Connections, then right-click Wi-Fi, then Properties.

Step 2 - Click on Configure.

Step 3 - Click on the Advanced Tab for the option and check to see if you’re in 802.11ax or 802.11ac mode.

Step 4 - If you have a Preferred Band option, prefer 5Ghz.

Not all wireless NICs are the same, but these are the options to focus on, should yours have the ability. There are other options to experiment with, like Roaming Aggressiveness, but there is no one size fits all solution and different settings can be device dependent.

Outcome

Your windows 10 wireless settings have been optimized for use on the USNH Wireless network.
