SharePoint: Fixing a 404 Error "Temporarily Down"

This article provides instructions if you have accidentally deleted your SharePoint site's home page and are now receiving a 404 error when you try to navigate to the page.

 

How-To

Task: To fix a 404 Error "Temporarily Down" or Hmmm... can't reach this page

 

Instructions

Step 1 - Copy either of the text strings below:

  • /_layouts/15/AdminRecycleBin.aspx?view=5  - directly connect to Recycle Bin
  • /_layouts/15/viewlsts.aspx?view=14   - directly connect to site contents.

Step 2 - Paste them to the end of the URL for your SharePoint site.

Step 3 - From Site Contents - go to Site Pages. Locate home.aspx. If missing go to Recycle bin from the left site menu.

Step 4 - If home.aspx is in site pages, highlight the page to bring up the 3 dots (menu) and choose from the menu - make home page.

Step 5 - If home.aspx is in the recycle bin, select the page and hit restore. This should restore the functionality of the home page. If not go to Step 4.

Outcome

You are taken to the recycle bin or contents folder of the SharePoint site.

 

Suggested Next Steps

If you are unhappy with your home page, additional pages can be created. Once configured as desired these pages can be set as the new home page.
