Summary
This article shows how to view the Windows BitLocker Recovery Key on a USNH-managed Windows computer.
For all compatible USNH-managed endpoint computers, "BitLocker whole drive encryption" is enabled as a default security** function. Periodically, a firmware/BIOS update, hardware repair, or password reset may trigger a BitLocker password prompt on your device. This is an expected security function. End users can view their BitLocker key of any institutional device which has properly stored its key.

Important: Personal device BitLocker key(s) are not stored under your USNH Account Device list and cannot be recovered by USNH IT staff.
- If you signed into Windows on your personal device with a personal Microsoft account and enabled BitLocker, that BitLocker key would likely be in your personal Microsoft account device list at https://myaccount.microsoft.com/device-list . Be sure to sign in with your personal account, not your USNH school account.
How-to
Task: To view the Windows BitLocker Recovery Key(s) for your USNH-managed windows computer.
From a separate computer or mobile device, navigate to: Microsoft - My Account Device List to view your authorized Microsoft's Device List.
Instructions
Step 1 - Sign in to your authorized Microsoft - My Account Device List using your USNH username@usnh.edu (e.g. jbd2519@usnh.edu).
Step 2 - You may see the USNH Single Sign On (SSO) page. Enter your USNH account password and MFA if required.
Step 3 - In your device list, choose the appropriate device, click View BitLocker keys
Step 4 - Click Show recovery key. Recovery key will be displayed in a pop-up window.
Step 5 - Type this key into the Recovery screen on the affected computer.
If your institutionally-owned device does not list a BitLocker key, contact the Technology Help Desk team for assistance.
Outcome
You should be able to view the Windows BitLocker Recovery Key for your USNH-managed windows computer.
