Summary
In some cases, workbooks connected to multiple published data sources will display the following error when a data source update is attempted in Tableau Desktop.
The following knowledge base article contains steps to mitigate the error.
Environment
Tableau Server via Tableau Desktop
Issue
Tableau Server Data Error: This workbook contains a Data Source that is dependent on a different Tableau Server.
Resolution
- Download the workbook from Tableau Server and open it in Tableau Desktop
- In the workbook, right-click the published data source in the Data pane, and then select Create Local Copy.
A copy of the published data source is added to the Data pane.
- Go to the sheet tab and select Data > Replace Data Source.
Note: You must have at least one field in the view to make the Replace Data Source option available.
- In the Replace Data Source dialog box, select the Current data source (The published version) and the Replacement data source (The local Copy).
- When finished, click OK.
- Next, close the published version of your data.
- Right-click (control-click on a Mac) the data source at the top of the Data pane and select Close.
- Alternatively, select a data source on the Data menu and then select Close.
- Then browse to the server and select the published version of that data source.
From the data pane choose New Data Source and select Tableau Server under Search for Data
Then choose your published data source from the available list and select Connect.
- Go to the sheet tab and select Data > Replace Data Source.
Note: You must have at least one field in the view to make the Replace Data Source option available.
- In the Replace Data Source dialog box, select the Current data source (The Local Copy) and the Replacement data source (The published version you just connected to).
- When finished, click OK.
- Next, close the local copy of your data.
Repeat these steps for each of the data sources connected to your workbook.
Result
After completing these steps you may edit the data sources as needed.
