Canvas: Microsoft Education LTI

Summary

In Fall 2025, Microsoft is replacing two existing LTIs (Teams Classes and Teams Meetings) with an all inclusive LTI Called Microsoft Education.

Body

Summary

This article has information about the Microsoft Education integration (LTI) which replaced the old Teams Classes and Teams Meetings integrations in Fall 2025. The article has instructions for faculty to configure Microsoft Education in their courses and how to manage the integration after initial setup.

Understanding Microsoft Education LTI

The Microsoft Education LTI brings together popular education tools — OneDriveTeams, and Teams Meetings — into a single integration.

Teams Functionality Outline

The Teams app helps you and your students navigate between Canvas and Teams.

You can access the course team right through the Microsoft Education dashboard for the course.

Important Considerations

  • You must sync enrollments before you use this tool.
  • Before students can access the class team, you must activate the team.
  • If you are going to Merge Courses, wait to set up the Team and Sync until after the courses are merged.

Team Meetings Functionality Outline

The Meetings app incorporates Teams Meetings into Canvas. Faculty and students can view upcoming and past meetings, find and play meeting recordings, schedule individual or recurring meetings, and easily join meetings related to the course, all from within Canvas.

OneDrive Functionality Outline

The Microsoft 365 LTI tool expands beyond the capabilities of the existing OneDrive LTI tool with capabilities for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel  - and is available within your LMS experience by embedding or linking documents, videos, PDFs, and images into course materials like assignments, discussions, modules, announcements and more.

Class Notebook Functionality Outline

The OneNote Class Notebook is an app that helps you set up OneNote in your class. This app will create a class notebook, which includes three types of sub-notebooks:

  • Student Notebooks—private notebooks that are shared between each educator and their individual students. Educators can access these notebooks at any time, but students cannot see other students' notebooks.
  • Content Library—a notebook for educators to share course materials with students. Educators can add and edit its materials, but for students, the notebook is read-only.
  • Collaboration Space—a notebook for the students and educator of the class to share, organize, and collaborate in.
