Joining a Microsoft 365 Group via Outlook

Overview

Microsoft 365 Groups provide a shared workspace for email, calendar, files, and collaboration. This guide explains how internal users at USNH can join a public or private M365 group using Outlook.


🔓 Public vs. Private Groups

Group Type Description Join Method
Public Anyone in the organization can view and join. Self-service via Outlook
Private Only approved members can view content. Request access; owner approval required

🛠️ Steps to Join a Public Group

Outlook on the Web

  1. Go to https://outlook.office.com.
  2. In the left pane, click Groups > Discover.
  3. Browse or search for the group name.
  4. Click the group and select Join.

Outlook Desktop App

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Navigate to the Groups section in the left folder pane.
  3. Click Discover Groups.
  4. Select the group and click Join.

📨 Request Access to a Private Group

If the group is private:

  1. Follow the same steps as above.
  2. Click Request to Join.
  3. The group owner will receive a notification and must approve your request.
