How-To

Before beginning, please note: the process of creating a basic page is same in all versions of Drupal hosted here at UNH. However, accessing the Basic Page content type (or template) will vary depending on which Drupal build you are using, as well as the permission level you have been assigned.

Task: Create a basic page in Drupal

Instructions

Step 1 - After navigating to, and logging in to your website, locate the admin menu at the top of the page. From the admin menu, select "Add Content" to expand the content type options. In the list that appears, click "Basic page" to begin the page creation process.

Step 2 - The Basic page content type contains three editable content fields:

  • Title (required) – This is the name of your page.
  • Body Field - powered by a WYSIWYG editor, which allows you to format text, insert images, add links, and more — without needing to write any code.
  • Description Field (required) – This field is used for your page's meta description, a brief summary of your page content.

Tip: Keep your meta description between 150–160 characters for best results in search engines. Write a clear, concise summary that accurately reflects the content of your page.

Step 3 - Click inside the Title field and type a clear, descriptive name for your new page. Keep the following best practices in mind:

  • Make it concise but descriptive (e.g., "About Our Department" rather than just "About")
  • Use title case for a professional appearance
  • Avoid special characters that may cause issues in the page URL

Please note: the new web page URL (or web page address) is derived from the Title field. Changing the web page title will, by default, change the URL, so it is best practice to settle on a page title prior to linking a new page into your website menu and to NOT change the title after the web page has been so linked.  If you must change the title of your web page, please fill out the Website & Mobile Development Support Form. to avoid problems with links and menu entries.

Step 4 - Next, click in the body content editor and add your page content. This is where you will write and format the main content of your page. You can either type your content directly into the editor or paste it from another source such as a Word document or text file.
The WYSIWYG toolbar at the top of the editor provides a variety of formatting tools, which may include:

  • Text formatting – Bold, italic, underline, and other font styling options
  • Headings – Organize your content using heading levels (H2, H3, etc.) for better readability and accessibility
  • Lists – Create bulleted or numbered lists to present information clearly
  • Links – Hyperlink text to internal pages or external websites
  • Images & Media – Insert images or other media directly into your content
  • Tables – Organize data in a structured table format

Accessibility Note: Use proper heading hierarchy, add alt text to images, and ensure any linked text is descriptive (e.g., "Learn more about our programs" rather than "Click here") to keep your content accessible to all users.

Step 5 - After entering a title and the body content, scroll to the bottom of the Edit page and click on the "Save" button.

Outcome

Your new web page is saved to your site and available for viewing. Because your new page is "published" by default, you can share the page URL with others to assist in a review process. When your new page is ready, it can be linked to your website navigation. Adding a web page to the site navigation menu is covered in a related video (above).
