This article explains how to set up and use passwordless sign in through the Microsoft Authenticator app. This new service will be available as of Aug. 17, 2026.
Important Notice to Mac users: Microsoft Authenticator Passwordless authentication is currently not supported on macOS devices. Mac users should continue using existing supported authentication methods.
How-To
Before you begin, you must Install and Register your Microsoft Authenticator app with your USNH M365 account. Then you need to enable phone sign-in before you can log into resources using your Authenticator App instead of a password.
Task: Register the Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile device.
Instructions
Step 1 - Browse to your M365 Account Security info page at https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo
Step 2 - Sign in with your USNH credentials.
Step 3 - Select Add method > Authenticator app > Add to add Authenticator.
Step 3 - Follow the instructions to install and configure the Authenticator app on your device. For detailed instructions see:
Step 4 - Select Done to finish the Authenticator configuration.
Outcome
You have installed and registered the Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile device.

Task: Enable passwordless phone sign-in in the Authenticator App.
Instructions
After you register the Authenticator app, you need to enable passwordless phone sign-in.
Step 1 - In Microsoft Authenticator, select the account you registered.
Step 2 - Tap Set up Passwordless sign-in requests.
Step 3 - Follow the on-screen instructions in the app to finish registering your account for passwordless phone sign-in.
Outcome
You have enabled passwordless phone sign-in in the Authenticator App.

Task: Log into a USNH SSO-enabled resource with a passwordless credential.
Instructions
To start the passwordless phone sign-in process for the first time for any USNH Single Sign-On (SSO) enabled web application, follow these steps:
Step 1 - Enter your name on the Sign-in pane.
Step 2 - Select Next.
Step 3 - If necessary, select Other ways to sign in.
Step 4 - Select Approve a request on my Authenticator app.
Step 5 - A number then appears. The app prompts you to enter that number to authenticate instead of entering a password.
Going forward, whenever you access this same SSO-enabled resource, your Authenticator app will guide you to this passwordless method. You can choose another sign-in method if you prefer.
Outcome
You are able to sign into a USNH SSO-enabled web application using your Authenticator App instead of a password.
