Installing Mathematica on Linux

Summary

Mathematica is a computational software system for symbolic and numerical computation, data visualization, and programming. This article describes the overview of Mathematica, and how to install it on Linux devices.

 

Installation

Task: To install Mathematica on your Linux device

The following instructions will install the required files on your computer to use Mathematica. This procedure only needs to be performed once, but it must be done on every individual computer on which you wish to use Mathematica.

Instructions

Step 1 - Connect to the repository for the installation files here:  UNH Mathematica. This folder is accessible to all UNH account holders, but you may have to login with your UNH username and password to gain access.

Step 2 - Open the folder for Mathematica Linux. The currently licensed version is: 13

Step 3 - Download the installation archive, in case will be a .iso file

Step 4 - cd to the directory where you downloaded the Mathematica installation files

Step 5 - Mount the installer shown below - you may need to do this as root

mount -o loop Mathematica_13.1.0_BNDL_LINUX.iso /mnt
cd /mnt/Unix/Installer
./MathInsatller

Step 6 - Follow the onscreen instructions.

Step 7 -When finished, the installer should report "Installation complete"


Starting Mathematica for the First Time

The first time you run Mathematica, you will need to activate your installation.

Note: if you activate Mathematica as the "root" user, the activation will apply to all users on that system. If you activate Mathematica as any other user, the activation will only apply to that one user and other users will also need to activate it.

Task: To activate your Mathematica

Step 1 - Start Mathematica

Step 2 - When prompted to Activate Mathematica, select "Other ways to activate"

Step 3 - Select "Connect to a network license server"

Step 4 - Enter academic.unh.edu as the name of the license server.

Step 5 - Click "Activate"

Step 6 - When prompted, read and accept the terms of the license agreement.
