Websites: Managing Back-ups and Storage Limits in USNH Domains

Summary

Common issues with storage limits for USNH Domains include uploaded files and application back-ups taking up too much space. Ways to resolve these problems include deleting old versions of files and backups and managing how application backups are generated.

How-to

Task: Managing Backup Files

Instructions

Every USNH Domains user is allotted 1000 MBs of storage. This storage space includes core application files, site back-ups, and any content or media that has been uploaded to a website or web application. Because of this, it's a good idea to limit the size of files that are uploaded. Images and documents can take up space quickly, so review old files and images frequently and remove any that are no longer in use. If you are managing a WordPress site consider installing an image optimization plug-in and hosting files externally and linking out to them when possible rather than uploading them directly into a site. Cloud hosting options include external services like Dropbox or Google Drive.

Account Backups and Storage

Having a backup of your account is useful if you have a problem with your site or application - it ensures there is a backup on file in the case that the most current one gets deleted, hacked, or otherwise corrupted.

However, most accounts are set up to auto-backup and you may have multiple backups stored - it is good to keep around one or two backups, but you likely won't need as many as there are stored for your site. In order to avoid backups taking up too much storage space, it's recommended that you turn off automatic backups and manually backup a copy of your applications instead.

To check on your backups in Domain of One's Own first login and go to your Dashboard under "Applications" find My Apps

Then select My Backups

Check your list and see how many backup files you have.

Delete old backup files you don't need by selecting the next to each backup file.

Proceed in deleting the backups by selecting delete for backups that you no longer need in order to clear up some storage space on your site.
