Summary
Large image files can quickly fill up storage capacity in USNH Domains and mySites at USNH WordPress installations. A number of image optimization and plugin options are available to help with image size management.
Image Storage and Optimization
One of the major issues people face when building WordPress websites with Domain of One's Own or mySites is image sizing and optimization for the web. Images that are high resolution aren’t ideal for the web, will take up more valuable space on a domains account or website than is needed, and affect the load speed of the site.
Large files such as high-resolution images and sizable documents can fill up space quickly. It’s good practice to keep sizes for large images under 600KB, ideally aiming for 100KB or less for smaller images like logos and thumbnails. Most images will not display wider than 1500 pixels, so there’s no need to upload high resolution versions.
Here are a few options for WordPress plugins that can be installed to help with image optimization and management. Please review the settings for each of these plugins carefully as you’ll want to choose settings that discard a copy of the original image and only keep the optimized version in your site’s files.
