Summary
This article explains how to use Kaltura Media in Canvas in lieu of Flip in a collaborative way or just between the instructor and the student. It also explains how to use Kaltura Capture to record media on the spot.

Task: Users will be able to use Kaltura Media's functionality in a way that mirrors Flip
Kaltura has many of the same functionalities as Flip (formally Flipgrid). With Kaltura, media can be recorded and shared in Discussions with the entire class or in an assignment with just the instructor. Students can upload their media to the Media Gallery, a public space in Canvas where they can view each other's media as well as the instructor's. Kaltura Capture, another feature of Kaltura, allows students to video record themselves on the spot. Media is saved to My Media, a private repository for anyone uploading or submitting a video in Canvas.

To create an assignment where both students and instructor can work collaboratively by viewing each other's media the Media Gallery, follow these steps:
- Step 1 -Create an assignment with the submission type: no submission : Canvas: How to Create an Assignment
- Step 2 -Have students navigate to the Media Gallery in the Course Menu (the order of items in your course menu may differ):
Note: Students may be asked if the Kaltura Scope Key can access their account. They should click authorize.
- Step 3 -Have students click on +Add Media
- Step 4 -Students will then choose the Add New on the upper right-side of their screen to upload their media.
- Step 5 -The instructor can view all the students' media in the Media Gallery and assign a grade in the initial no submission assignment.

Kaltura Capture is a tool that allows students to create media on the spot. Media is saved to My Media.

Kaltura Capture has a simple user interface that requires only one click to record, and it doesn't have complex setup nor a lengthy learning curve. Kaltura Capture is supported both on Windows and Mac. You can record your camera, screen, and audio, or optionally turn off any of the three. Once created, you can use Kaltura Capture to upload new videos into the Kaltura Mediaspace video portal or Canvas.
