Devices without a standard internet browser, such as a TV or game console or other IoT type devices, will need to be manually registered on the network by using a device that is already registered and connected to USNH Eduroam, (such as a computer or smartphone).
If you have not yet registered an Eduroam device on our network, please visit our knowledge base article titled: Connecting to the USNH Wireless Network using Laptops, Tablets, or Phones. Alternatively, feel free to submit a request to the Help Desk for assistance with registration of your internet-connected device.
Step 1. Find the MAC Address
A MAC address is a unique address used to identify your device on the network and is typically found in the settings section of your device. Please consult your device owner's manual for assistance in locating its MAC address or visit our Knowledge Base article titled: Finding MAC Address on your Devices
- You may find a MAC address listed as a physical address, Wi-Fi address, or Ethernet ID, etc, for example, MAC address: 00:AA:11:BB:22:CC.
Step 2. Register Your Device on the campus Open Wireless Network
Internet-connected devices such as TVs and game consoles must connect to the campus’s Open network (KSC-Open, PSU-Open, UNH-Open), as they typically do not support the authentication method of USNH Eduroam Secure.
- Connect the device you are registering to the Open network (KSC-Open, PSU-Open, UNH-Open). If your device automatically conducts a connection test, it may fail at this point, and this is expected.
- Using a device already registered and connected to USNH Eduroam (such as your laptop or smartphone), navigate to our wireless registration page. This link is only accessible when connected to the campus network.
- Review the Acceptable Use Policy and click Agree.
- Click Network Registration.
- Enter your fully qualified USNH username and password (e.g. jbd2519@usnh.edu)
- Click on the Green Register a New Device Link.
- Enter the requested Hardware address (MAC Address), your Username and alternative contact information (optional),
- Wait 10 minutes and reboot your device. Your device is now registered. If necessary, re-connect your device to the Campus Open network.
Incompatible Devices
Due to the complexity and size of our state-wide wireless network, some home consumer devices are not compatible with wireless at USNH.
Many IoT devices such as wireless printers, “home assistants” Smart TVs, Smart lights, etc. have broadcast reliant features that are detrimental when used on a high-density network like USNH.
They rely on various forms of broadcast traffic to advertise their presence to potential client computers. Uncontrolled broadcast traffic congests and cripples a large enterprise network.
To avoid a situation where a device you purchase is not usable on campus, verify with your vendor that the device does not require any sort of broadcast or advertising traffic to be visible to clients.
