Summary

This article shows how to install LAPS GUI and look up a LAPS password. Local Admin Password Solution (LAPS) is a product that manages local administrator passwords and shares permissions, storing them in Active Directory. LAPS automatically randomizes and updates passwords on a routine basis, so that no two users ever have the same passwords and so that passwords don’t become stale and more vulnerable to hacking.

Task: To Install LAPS GUI on Windows

Instructions

Step 1 - Login to a windows workstation using your ADM account

Step 2 - If not on a campus network connection, connect to VPN

Step 3 - Open Company Portal

Step 4 - Locate LAPS GUI and install

Task: To look up a LAPS Password

 

Instructions

Step 1 - If not on a campus network connection, connect to VPN.
Step 2 - Locate the LAPS UI Application in the start menu, Right-click the LAPS UI tool and select “Run as a different user” and enter your ADM credentials.
Step 3 - In the “Computer Name” box, type the name of the computer whose password you want to retrieve.
Step 4 - Click “Search”.  The matching computer object’s password will be displayed below.

 

Step 5 - Using the recovered password and the Administrator account, proceed to login.

Step 6 - In the username field, enter .\  Use "administrator" for the account and the LAPS password to login

 

Outcome

You should be able to look up a LAPS password.
