eduroam: Updating WiFi on a Personal Device before October 15, 2026

Summary

This article has instructions for how to update wifi devices which connect to eduroam by a certificate, prior to a certificate change happening on Oct. 15, 2026. It includes detailed instructions for updating personal devices not managed by USNH IT and links for how to update USNH-issued devices. This ONLY applies to devices which connect via certificate - devices which connect with username and password may need to approve the new certificate, but otherwise are unaffected.

This article is for personal or non-managed devices. For USNH-managed devices, please follow the instructions in eduroam: Updating WiFi on a USNH Managed Device before October 15, 2026.

What's happening

If your device connects to eduroam using a certificate from the USNH onboarding tool, it will stop connecting on October 15, 2026 unless you update it. Updating takes about 5 minutes.

The certificate that identifies the USNH Wi-Fi servers expires on October 15 and must be renewed. Our certificate provider has changed how its certificates are issued, and devices set up with the old method will not work with the renewed server certificate. Those devices will refuse to connect, even though nothing else about them has changed.

The fix is to replace your device's old eduroam setup with the new configuration. You can update this now by running the applet at wifi.usnh.edu  in your web browser - you do not need to wait until October 15.

Who needs to do this

If you were sent to this page when connecting to the network, the device you are using needs this update.

You also need to update any other device where you set up eduroam by running the onboarding tool at wifi.usnh.edu. See detailed instructions below.

View how your devices connect

Go to networking.usnh.edu/nac  to see your registered devices.

  • Devices with a green check mark connect with a certificate and need to be updated following the instructions below.
    • Each device is separate: update every phone, tablet, and laptop you use that has a green check mark.
  • Devices with an orange check mark connect with username and password and do not need to be updated at this time.
    • You may see a one-time prompt to trust the renewed server certificate after October 15.
    • Important: accept it ONLY if the server name is clearpass.unh.edu.

How do you update your devices that connect by certificate?

How-To

Choose how to reconnect your non-USNH, personal device(s)

Use one of these two options for each personal device that connects to eduroam. Option A can run on any wifi or mobile network, doesn't have to be on campus, and your device remains connected throughout the process. Option B starts by removing your old setup. Instructions for both are in the section for your device below.

Option A: Re-run the onboarding tool Option B: Connect with username and password
How it works Installs a new certificate and Wi-Fi profile from wifi.usnh.edu, then connects automatically. You enter your USNH username@usnh.edu and password when connecting.*
Software needed The onboarding app for your device (instructions below) None
After a password change Keeps working You must enter your new password on each device
Best for Most personal devices Devices where the onboarding app won't install or run

*Account format for Option B: your university username followed by @usnh.edu (like jbd2519@usnh.edu), on every campus, along with your normal university password.

Before you Begin

  • You can start from eduroam. The onboarding tool at wifi.usnh.edu  works while you are connected to eduroam; it downloads and configures everything itself.
  • If eduroam has already stopped working, connect to your campus-Open network (UNH-Open, PSU-Open, or KSC-Open), a mobile network, or any other wifi network, then continue.
  • Know your username and password if you choose Option B.

Warnings

  • NEVER choose "Do not validate" for the CA certificate. Skipping validation lets a fake access point capture your password.
  • ONLY "Accept" a certificate prompt that shows our server name:  clearpass.unh.edu  - any other server name may be fake or malicious.

Additional Settings you may need for Option B

Most devices ask for only some of these. Use them if your device asks for something the steps below do not cover.

Setting Value
Network name (SSID) eduroam
Security WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise
EAP method PEAP
Phase 2 (inner) authentication MSCHAPv2
CA certificate Use system certificates
Domain / server name clearpass.unh.edu
Identity (username) username@usnh.edu
Anonymous identity Leave blank

Getting help

Most problems come from an old profile or certificate that was not fully removed. Before contacting the help desk, try these:

  • The onboarding tool says it worked, but eduroam won't connect: remove the old configuration as in Option B for your device, restart the device, and run the tool again.
  • Your device asks you to trust a certificate you don't recognize: do not accept it. Check that the server name is clearpass.unh.edu.
  • Option B keeps asking for your password: check the username format (username@usnh.edu, like jbd2519@usnh.edu) and that your password hasn't recently changed.
  • You can't reach wifi.usnh.edu : connect to your campus-Open network (UNH-Open, PSU-Open, or KSC-Open), a mobile network, or any other wifi network first.

If you still can't connect, contact your campus help desk at the number below. Tell them your device type and operating system, which option you tried, and any error messages you saw.
