Summary
SAS is used for advanced analytics, multivariate analyses, business intelligence, data management, and predictive analytics. This article describes the overview of SAS, and how to install it.
How-To
Task: To install and activate SAS
SAS requires that the entire application be installed on your computer. Your computer will still need a network connection to check out a license for SAS from the server each time you start the program.
Instructions
Step 1 - Connect to the repository for the installation files here: UNH SAS. This folder is accessible to all UNH account holders, but you may have to login with your UNH username and password to gain access.
Step 2 - Open the SAS folder for the version and operating system you would like to install. The currently licensed version is: 9.4 TS1M7
Note: SAS is currently only available for installation on Windows and Linux. SAS can not be installed on MacOS.
Step 3 - You will see an archive for the software. In this case, it will be a .zip archive file. Download this by clicking on the item and then clicking on the black Download button that appears in the middle of the browser window. Be sure to Download the .zip archive to your computer. Do not Open it from the location.
Step 4 - Once the download has finished, locate the .zip archive. Typically it is in the Downloads folder in your user folder on the computer. Right-click on the .zip archive and select Extract All. Once extracted, you should see the installation files to continue the process.
Step 5 - Start the installation process by running the setup.exe installation program. The SAS installation process is fairly complex due to the large number of tools and options in the SAS system. In general, you can proceed through the installer selecting the defaults, but the subsequent steps will detail each of the screens you will go through. Please read carefully!
Step 6 - Select English as the desired language.
Step 7 - For the Deployment Task, select Install SAS software, then click Next.
Step 8 - For the SAS Home location, accept the defaults, then click Next.
Step 9 - For the Deployment Type, select Install SAS Foundation and Related Software, then click Next.
Step 10 - For the Products to Install, most users will want to accept the defaults, but if you know you have specific requirements, review what is and is not selected and add other things you need. Do not uncheck anything that was checked off by default. Click Next to proceed.
Step 11 - For the next couple of screens about whether to use the 32-bit or 64-bit versions, accept the defaults, then click Next.
Step 12 - For the SAS Foundation Products to Install, accept the default options, which installs all of the products, then click Next.
Step 13 - For the Installation Data file, the wizard should locate the correct current license file automatically. Make sure the software shows as being licensed through 30JUL2024, then click Next. If not, you can download the license file from the repository: SAS License Files
Step 14 - For Language Support, unless you know you want languages other than English, click the Clear All button, then click Next. If you do want additional languages, select just the ones you need before proceeding.
Step 15 - For the remaining steps asking about Regional Settings, Default Products, and Document Conversion, accept the defaults, and keep clicking Next until the installation process starts.
Step 16 - At some point in the setup process, The setup program will check to make sure that your computer meets both the minimum hardware and minimum software requirements. It is likely that your computer will not have all of the software prerequisites installed. If this is the case, the Minimum Requirements Wizard will start. Proceed through the Minimum Requirements Wizard, clicking Next as needed to install the prerequisite software packages. These installs may require that you restart your computer. If so, reboot and then restart these instructions again at step 1.
Step 17 - The actual installation process will likely take as much as 30 to 60 minutes. Please be patient.
Step 18 - When the installation process finishes, you may be prompted about sending information back to SAS. This is not necessary.
Step 19 - Once the installation is complete, you may discard the installation archive you downloaded in the initial steps.
Outcome
You have successfully installed and licensed SAS.
