Spartan - MAC

Summary

Spartan is a molecular modeling and computational chemistry software suite. This article describes the overview of Spartan, and how to install it on MacOS devices.

Installation

Task: To install Spartan on your MacOS devices

Spartan Student requires that the entire application be installed on your computer. Your computer will still need a network connection to check out a license for Spartan Student from the server each time you start the program.

Instructions

Step 1 - Connect to the repository for the installation files from UNH Spartan. This folder is accessible to all UNH account holders, but you may have to login with your UNH username and password to gain access.

Step 2 - Open the folder for Student Spartan MacOS. The currently licensed version is: 9

Step 3 - You will see an archive for the software. In this case, it will be a .dmg disk image file. Download this by clicking on the item and then clicking on the black Download button that appears in the middle of the browser window.

Step 4 - Once the download has finished, open the archive from the downloads location that your browser uses. Typically, this is the Downloads folder in your user folder on the computer. When you open the archive, you should see the installation files to continue the process.

Step 5 - Double-click the SpartanStudentV9.dmg file to mount the disk image.

Step 6 - Drag the Spartan Student V9 file to the Applications folder to copy it to your computer.

Step 7 - Open the Applications folder and then double-click on the Spartan Student V9 program to start it. Be sure you are opening the program from the Applications folder and not the original on the disk image.

Step 8 - Accept the license agreement and then click Accept.

Step 9 - Enter your administration account username and password when prompted.

Step 10 - The Spartan Student software will now report "License not found". This is normal. Click the button to Launch License Utility.

Step 11 - In the license utility, select the Network option and click Next.

Step 12 - Click the Install button to install the licensing drivers.

Step 13 - Enter your administration account username and password when prompted.

Step 14 - Switch to the window for the Sentinel Runtime Installer. Be sure to NOT click Next in the Wavefunction License Utility window until you go through the process of installing the Sentinel Runtime. Instead, slide the Wavefunction License Utility window to the side to get it out of the way.

Step 15 - In the Sentinal Runtime installer, proceed there with the installer accepting the license agreement and the default options. If prompted again, enter your administration account username and password another time.

Step 16 - After the Sentinel Runtime installer has finished, click Next in the Wavefunction License Utility window.

Step 17 - Enter academic.unh.edu as the name of the license server.

Step 18 - If prompted, once again, enter your administration account username and password.

Step 19 - Click Done to exit the license utility.

Step 20 - You may need to quit and restart the Spartan Student software now that you have configured the licensing properly.

Step 21 - Once the installation is complete, you may discard the installation archive you downloaded in the initial steps.

Using Spartan Student

Because Spartan Student must check out a license from the UNH license server each time it runs, you must be either on the UNH campus on a wired Ethernet connection or using the secure eduroam wireless network, or you must be connected to the USNH VPN service if using the software from off campus.

Once you have completed the installation, you can run Spartan Student by double-clicking on the Spartan Student V9 program located in /Applications. Optionally, you can drag the Spartan Student program to your Dock for easy access.
