AppsAnywhere: Accessing and Using Software Apps - Chromebook

Summary

AppsAnywhere is a cloud-based application, available to students, faculty, and staff, that provides on-demand access to academic software anywhere, anytime, and is accessible from any Windows, MacOS, and Chromebook device. AppsAnywhere allows you to access your class software without visiting a computer lab or connecting to a VPN and you can also run multiple applications simultaneously.

 

Launching Applications in AppsAnywhere

Task: To access and use software applications through AppsAnywhere on a Chromebook

Note: All applications from AppsAnywhere will be launched in the Parallel Virtual Desktop.

Instructions

Step 1 - Browse to https://appsanywhere.usnh.edu

Step 2 - Sign in with your USNH username@usnh.edu (like jbd2519@usnh.edu)password, and MFA if required

Step 3 -   You will see the AppsAnywhere app launcher. Find a software application by searching in the search bar or clicking "View all apps" for an alphabetical list of apps. If you still do not see the app you want, click "Load more apps" at the bottom of the page

Step 4 - Hover over an application to launch it. Click "Launch"

Step 5 - You will be asked to authenticate. Sign in with your USNH username@usnh.edu (like jbd2519@usnh.edu)password, and click "Sign In"

Step 6 - The application will open. The process may take a while. Wait for the application to open.

 

Outcome

The selected app will be open with a virtual desktop in the Parallels app.

Saving Your Work to Your Local Drive

Task: To save a file to your local drive through AppsAnywhere on a Chromebook

Instructions

Step 1 - To save on your Chromebook, please choose "Save As" (Excel has been used as an example here)

Step 2 - Select "Browse"

Step 3 - Click the drop-down arrow in the address bar, and choose your Name by clicking

Step 4 - Double-click "Desktop" folder

Step 5 - Making sure that you are in the Desktop folder, choose a name for your file, then click "Save"

Step 6 - Your file now needs to be downloaded to your Chromebook. In the lower right hand corner of your browser, click the download button

Step 7 - A dialog box will appear. Click on "Desktop", choose your file to download, and click "Open". The file will be downloaded to your Chromebook and will be located in your "Downloads" folder

Step 8 - You now have the file available on your Chromebook. You can move it to the folder you want or submit in Canvas or share it in email, etc.

 

Outcome

The chosen file has been saved from the virtual desktop to your local drive.

Opening Your Work from Your Local Drive

Task: To open a file from your local drive through AppsAnywhere on a Chromebook

If you have a file on your Chromebook that you want to work on in an application in AppsAnywhere, you must first launch the application, then upload the file from your Chromebook to the AppsAnywhere server "Desktop" folder, then you can work with it in the software application.

AppsAnywhere applications should always save to and open from the "Desktop" location on the server.

Instructions

Step 1 - To upload a file, click the upload button in the lower right corner of the browser window (Excel has been used as an example here)

Step 2 - Choose your file and click "Open"

Step 3 - A dialog box will open. From the address bar, choose your <username> folder, then "Desktop"

Step 4 - Choose your file and click "Open". This will save the file to the virtual desktop

Step 5 - To open files from your Chromebook, please choose "Open"

Step 6 - Select "Browse"

Step 7 - Choose your <username>, then "Desktop" location to find the file

Step 8 - Click "Open" in the lower right corner of the dialog box, and your file will open

 

Outcome

The chosen file has been loaded from your local drive to the virtual desktop.
