Classroom AV: Troubleshooting Display Error "No HDMI Signal Detected" (Windows)

Summary

This article explains how to solve the problem of "No HDMI Signal Detected" when connecting a Windows 11 laptop to a USNH classroom AV system by changing the laptop display settings.

Environment

  • Classroom AV systems at USNH using HDMI connections
  • Laptops running Windows 11
  • Issue may affect students, faculty, or staff

Issue

When connecting a Windows 11 laptop to a classroom AV system, you may see a “No HDMI Signal Detected” message on the touch panel. In these cases, the projector does not automatically start up, and while the laptop may recognize the HDMI connection, the display either remains unchanged or fails to appear on the projector.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps to adjust display options to mirror the laptop screen onto the classroom display:

Instructions

Step 1 - Press Windows Key + P on the laptop keyboard.

Step 2 - A Display Options menu will appear.

Step 3 - Select Duplicate to mirror the laptop screen to the classroom display.

Step 4 - Click Keep changes, then Apply.

Result

This action ensures the laptop sends video output to both its internal screen and the connected AV system.

Cause

This issue typically occurs when the laptop display option is set to "PC screen only" or “Display Only on 1”. This setting means the laptop is not sending a signal to the external display (projector or monitor). Changing the setting solves the issue.
