Task: This article describes how to request machine captioning for Kaltura videos.
Instructions:
Machine captioning is usually completed automatically when a user uploads media to Kaltura. This process varies in time depending on how long the video is. The longer the video the longer the time to caption. However, most are completed within several minutes of being uploaded. If for any reason you do not see machine captions, this article will describe how to go about requesting machine captions within Kaltura. There are also specific scenarios outlined below where you might want to request new machine captions than the automatic ones provided.
There are multiple reasons one would want captions, including:
- The media has been edited and the original captions no longer match the media content.
- Media is in a language other than English and needs corresponding captions (Kaltura provides captioning services for over 15 additional languages).
To request machine captions within Kaltura:
- Go to your university's Kaltura MediaSpace or My Media page.
- Log in with your login information.
- Click on your name in the top right corner, then click the My Media button.
- Select the media entry that you wish to request captions for.
- Underneath the video, select the Actions button, then click Caption and Enrich..
- Select the Service as Machine, the Source Media Language (the language primarily used in the media), then click Submit.
- You will be redirected to a list of your caption requests. These take some time to process and will not be finished immediately after requesting. Check back to this page periodically to see the status of your requests. You will know your captions are ready when their status changes from PENDING to COMPLETE.
- At this point your media will have machine captions, which are around 80% accurate. If your captions need to be 100% accurate, you can proceed to edit them.
If you would like your machine captions to be verified and updated by an additional person, there are options. Please see the following article for further information.
