Type I Classroom Standard (Bring-Your-Own-Device / Laptop-Ready)

Purpose: This article provides an overview of audiovisual capabilities within a Type I standard LST Classroom.

Intended Audience:  Faculty, staff and students

Environment:  University System of New Hampshire Classrooms

Scope of Article:

This article explains what to expect when teaching in a Type I classroom.

The Learning Space Technology team sets up classrooms with a consistent set of tools to make them easy to use. No matter which campus, building, or room you’re in, the experience should feel the same.

There are three types of classrooms: Type I, Type II, and Type III.

AV Components

A Type I classroom is designed to let you quickly connect your personal device (laptop, tablet, or phone) and start presenting.

Getting started is simple:

  • An HDMI or USB-C cable is provided in the classroom space.
  • Once the cable is connected to your device the system will automatically turn on and begin displaying your content.
    • For devices that require a display adapter to connect to HDMI; first connect the HDMI cable to the adapter, then connect the adapter to your device.
    • DO NOT use a display adapter with provided USB-C cable, you should be able to connect this cable directly to a devices native USB-C port.

The system automatically adjusts the display for the best resolution and screen size, so you don’t need to change any settings within your device.

Wireless Presentation option:

  • You can also present wirelessly using the AirMedia connection.

Display(s):

  • Most rooms use a ceiling-mounted projector.
  • Smaller rooms may have a wall-mounted flat screen display rather than a ceiling mounted projector.
  • A pull-down projection screen or motorized screen will be available.

Audio:

  • Sound from your device plays through the room’s speakers.

User Controls

A touch-screen control panel is located on the wall near the teaching area.
You can use it to:

  • Switch between using the cable connection or AirMedia wireless presentation
  • View the 4-digit code needed to connect to AirMedia
  • Adjust the room's speaker volume

If the room includes additional features like a motorized screen, window shades, or lighting controlsyou’ll find those controls on the Audiovisual touch-panel as well.

A Note About Laptops

Full-time faculty are provided the option of a managed lightweight laptop across USNH for use in classrooms. With tools like OneDrive, Canvas, and Teams, the laptop has become the main teaching device utilized. It is easy to bring between your office and the classroom.

Most modern laptops use a USB-C port for video and audio.

  • You may need a USB-C to HDMI adapter to connect to the classroom's HDMI cable
  • You will NOT need an adapter to connect by the USB-C cable
  • If you prefer, you can use AirMedia wireless presentation, which does not require an adapter

If you don’t have a laptop:

  • Faculty assigned to teach in a Type I (Laptop-Ready) classroom who are not issued a laptop, or who typically use a desktop, may borrow a USNH-managed laptop for the semester.
  • Contact your campus Help Desk for details
