This article explains how to add a recording of your name pronunciation to Canvas as well as including a phonetic spelling of your name in your Canvas profile.

How-To

Part 1 - Record the pronunciation of your name using any recording device

The first thing you will need to do is record yourself saying your name.

A common way to do this is using the Voice Memos app on an iPhone or Mac, or Voice Recorder in Windows 10/11, but you can do this with any audio recording tool you have on any internet-connected device.

Note: It’s a good idea to make sure that the name you are recording is the same one you have listed in Canvas, so that people can see and hear it at the same time.

Part 2 - Save the recording to OneDrive

Once you have recorded your name, you will need to save that audio file somewhere online that others can access. OneDrive is perfect for this. Once you have uploaded your recording to OneDrive, you will need to copy the link and update the sharing settings.

Note: The recommended link sharing settings are “People in USNH” and “Can view”.

Part 3 - Link to the OneDrive recording

Now, you are ready to add your recording to Canvas.

Step 1 - In the global navigation menu on the left side of Canvas, click on “Account”, and then “Profile”.

Step 2 - Go all the way over to the right side of the screen and click the 3 dots, then “Edit profile”.

Step 3 - Under the Links section, click “Add another link”. Type in the text that will let people know what the link does, e.g. “My name pronunciation”. 

Step 4 - Then paste that link you copied from the file in your OneDrive.

Step 5 - Click “Save profile”, and you are finished,

Part 4 - Add Written Name Pronunciation to your Profile

Now, you can add your written name pronunciation to Canvas.

Step 1 - In the global navigation menu on the left side of Canvas, click on “Account”, and then “Profile”.

Step 2 - Go all the way over to the right side of the screen and click the 3 dots, then “Edit profile”.

Step 3 - Immediately below your name will be a field titled "Name Pronunciation" subtitled "To confirm the correct pronunciation of your name, enter a phonetic pronunciation."

Step 4 - Complete the field with any desired phonetic spelling of your name. An example is presented below.
