Summary
This article explains how faculty, staff, and students using Microsoft 365 on Linux can install Microsoft Outlook as a Progressive Web App (PWA).
A PWA allows Outlook on the Web to be installed and used similarly to a desktop application. Once installed, Outlook appears in the applications menu, opens in its own window, supports notifications, and can be pinned to the task bar or dock.
How-To
Task: Install Outlook as a PWA
Instructions
Step 1 - Open a Chromium-based browser.
Step 2 - Navigate to https://outlook.office.com
Step 3 - Sign in with your USNH Microsoft 365 account.
Step 4 - A new icon will appear on the right hand side of the browser's address bar.
Step 5 - Move your cursor over the new icon.
Step 6 - Select "Install Outlook (PWA)" (wording may vary slightly by browser).
Step 7 - Follow the on-screen instructions to Install the PWA.
Outcome
Outlook will open in its own window and be added to your applications menu.
The Outlook PWA behaves similarly to a traditional desktop application:
- Appears in the applications menu
- Opens in its own window rather than a browser tab
- Can be pinned to the taskbar or dock
- Supports desktop notifications
- Maintains its own sign-in session
- Launches directly from the applications menu
