AVST: About the Voicemail Indicator Light

Summary

This article explains how the voicemail message indicator light on your campus phone works and what you can do if it appears to be "stuck" on. This applies to individual UNH and USNH AVST voicemail users who have a campus phone with a voicemail indicator light.

Content

As of Sept. 30, 2026, the voicemail message indicator light on your campus phone reflects ONLY the status of voicemails that you have or have not listened to on your campus phone.  Most people also receive their voicemail as an audio file in their email.  Listening to the audio in email or reading that email message has no effect on the voicemail message indicator light on your phone.

What to Expect After this Change:

  • If you check voicemail through your email: If you listen to and manage voicemail messages from email, the indicator light on the desk phone will not reflect current read or unread status of messages. This means the desk phone voicemail light will no longer be a useful indicator of whether a new voicemail exists. Your email Inbox will be the source of that information.
  • If you check voicemail through your desk phone: The indicator light will continue to work as normal. Note that voicemail notification emails will not be marked as read unless you open them in your Inbox.

To Do: No user action is required.

Optional: Disable the Voicemail Indicator Light: If the desk phone indicator light is no longer useful to you — or if you find it distracting — Telecom can disable it upon request. To do so, submit a Phone Services Support form with as much detail as possible. Choose

  • Request Type: Add/modify calling features or services
  • Request Title/Summary: Disable Voicemail Light
  • Calling Feature/Service: Modify Voicemail
