Computer: Finding IP Address

Summary

This article has instructions for how to find an IP address on a Windows or MacOS device. 

The Internet Protocol (IP) address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. IP addresses are represented as a series of numbers, separated by dots (in IPv4) or colons (in IPv6). Depending on the version of the IP address, it may vary in length and format. Example IP Address formats:

192.168.0.1
172.16.254.1
8.8.8.8

 

How-to

Task: To find your computer's IP address on Windows devices

Instructions

Step 1 - Open the command prompt by clicking on the "Start Menu"

Step 2 - Then type in "cmd" into the search bar, and then click on the icon that comes up or press enter

Step 3 - Once the command prompt is open, type in "ipconfig"

 

Step 4 - The line that says 'IPv4 Address" (highlighted in the picture) is your IP address.

 

Outcome

You should be able to find your computer's IP address on a Microsoft Windows device.

Task: To find your computer's IP address on MacOS devices

Instructions

Step 1 - Click the Apple logo on the top left and select "System Settings..."

Step 2 - Select "Network"

Step 3 - Select "Wi-Fi" or "Ethernet" depending on your connection type

Step 4 - Click "Details..."

Step 6 - Your IP Address will be displayed

Outcome

You should be able to find your computer's IP address on a MacOS device.
