What's a Type I - BYOD Classroom?
[Updated 2-26-2024]
Summary
This article is designed to provide information to faculty teaching in a Type I classroom. The Learning Space Technology group designs and installs standardized packages of classroom technology in an effort to create an excellent standardized user experience. The user experience should not vary across campuses, buildings or classrooms so that users of the classrooms can concentrate on the craft of teaching rather than the technology. There are three main standards of classroom Types I,II and III.
AV Components
Video and Audio
A Type I BYOD Classroom has a wall-mounted, HDMI or USB-C cable of sufficient length so that the user can uncoil it from the provided storage hook and plug the HDMI or USB-C connector into their laptop or other computing device (tablet, mobile phone, etc). The audio and video signals will travel from the device triggering the audiovisual system to turn on - no other user interface / button-pushing is required. The display system uses EDID technology so that the display device creates an optimal display with proper resolution and size with instructions communicated by the user's device.
The display itself will be a ceiling-mounted laser-lamped, 5500 lumen LCD projector. Some smaller rooms may see a flat-panel wall mounted LCD display.
A manual, pull-down projection screen is provided. Some rooms may have an electric screen.
All BYOD rooms also include AirMedia® Wireless Presentation https://td.usnh.edu/TDClient/60/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=2067 .
The audio from a user's laptop or device will be amplified and the sound will be distributed through ceiling speakers or small loudspeakers located on either side of the projection screen.
User Control
A touch-enabled control panel will be mounted on the wall near the teaching station. The control panel allows users to switch between the wired HDMI cable connection and the AirMedia® Wireless Presentation option. The control panel also displays the 4-digit security code for AirMedia® Wireless Presentation access.
The control panel also allows users to control volume levels and - if motorized projection screens, widow shaded or a lighting system are present in the classroom, these controls will also be found here.
A word about laptops
With the advent of full-time faculty being provided the option of a managed lightweight laptop across USNH, the ubiquitous nature of OneDrive and other cloud applications, the laptop has become just another tool that faculty bring to their office and classroom. Those staff who teach in BYOD classrooms who are not full time faculty or who are, but have elected the Desktop option as their choice of office computer, can borrow a USNH managed laptop for a semester-long loan. Call your local campus help desk for more details.
Laptops of the current era tend to have USB-C as their video, audio and USB output, therefore the purchase of an HDMI to USB C adapter like this one is strongly advised. Using the AirMedia® Wireless Presentation option requires no adapter.
