Summary
Microsoft has revised the terms of the institutional license assigned to some USNH users. Starting March 25th, 2024, if you are a retiree, faculty emeritus/a, sponsored user, PSU friend, or faculty in the grace period after your appointment ends, you will no longer be able to use your USNH account to download, install, or access Microsoft Office desktop applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) installed on your personally-owned computer. However, you will still have access to Microsoft Office apps online through https://portal.office.com using a web browser like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge.
Alternatively, if you own a personal Microsoft 365 license and sign into the desktop apps with that personal account, then you can continue using the local applications installed on your personal computer. If you use a USNH-owned Windows computer for work, please contact the Client Services Team to have a new license remotely installed on the device. This device-based license will allow you to use locally installed Microsoft Office desktop applications on that work machine (Windows only).

To access those apps, you can go to https://portal.office.com in your favorite web browser and sign in with your university credentials (username@usnh.edu and your account password & MFA). From there, on the left-hand side, you should see a few of the apps you have access to, and you can either click the waffle icon at the top or the three dots at the bottom to see the full suite of apps available to you.
You can select the application you want to use (for example, Microsoft Word), and it will bring you to a web page where you can choose to open something from your OneDrive or start something new.
After selecting an option (either opening a file or creating a template or blank document), you will be directed to an editor in your web browser that resembles the same editor you would use on your local device. You can access the files stored on your computer and in your OneDrive and save to either location, as well.
This will work the same way for Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
You may purchase your own Microsoft 365 license and sign into the apps with that account if you want to continue using the local applications installed on your personal computer.
Note: if you are using a USNH-owned Windows computer for work, you can request to have the desktop apps installed on that work machine (Windows only).
