Summary

This article will help you use share a folder and its contents on the USNH High Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster Premise to others using Globus.

Globus is a data transfer service widely used by universities and academic institutions. It allows researchers to transfer data between computers inside and outside of USNH. Globus may be used for any number and size of files.

You can not directly share one of your folders on Premise. To share premise data, you will have to use globus to

  • Create a shareable location for your files
  • Copy files to the shareable location
  • Grant permissions to the share

If the data you wish to share is on a local computer or workstation, please email rcc.support@unh.edu

How-To

Before you begin - Make sure that the user you wish to share with (herein called the recipient) has a Globus account. Obtaining the email address the recipient used to register their Globus account beforehand will streamline the file transfer process. Please don't assume their email address, as the recipient may use a different email address for their Globus account. (USNH faculty/staff are encouraged to create their Globus account using their institutional email address.)

  • If the recipient is a USNH employee, they can use this article to get started.
  • If the recipient is not a USNH employee, they should still start with the same article to see if their institution is available.
  • If neither work, the recipient can create a stand-alone account.

The remaining steps are for you, the sharer.

Task: Prepare Globus to be able to setup the share

Instructions

Step 1 - Authenticate into Globus using your USNH credentials. Make sure you are in the File Manager.

Step 2 - In the Panels section in the upper-right hand corner, click the icon with two rectangles to create a two-panel layout, like the one illustrated below.

Step 3 - Click on the left-hand Collection search field, search for "Premise USNH" You will see your files on the left-half. Please note the Premise home directories are now "Premise HPC USNH home directories" -- not "UNH Premise home directories" and shown below.

Step 4 - Click on the right-hand Collection search field, search for "POSIX UNH.EDU shared data folder" You may or may not see anything on the right-half.

Outcome

Globus is prepared and ready for you to proceed to create a share location and share files.

Task: Create the share location and upload the files, ready to share

Instructions

Step 1 - Click on the bottom right list of files to make sure that the background is white (and the background of the bottom left list of files is grey).

Step 2 - Create a folder by clicking on the button in between the two panels, as seen below. A New folder will appear, and you can give it a name.

Step 3 - Double-click on the folder to enter it.

Step 4 - In the bottom left hand side, navigate to the folder that you wish to share (or contains the file(s) you wish to share).

Step 5 - Select what you want to share by checking the boxes.

Step 6 - Drag one of the highlighted (checked) files from the bottom left to the bottom right. Once completed, you will see a notification saying the files have been transferred. (You may need to click the refresh button above the list of files to see them.)

Outcome

Files have been transferred into the new sharing location, ready to share with recipient(s).

Task: Share files and notify the recipient

Instructions

Step 1 - In the bottom-right side, click the "Up one folder" button to get back to the folder you created.

Step 2 - Select the folder by checking its box and then click on the share icon.

Step 3 - You may see Guest Collections you've created before, but you may also see that you do not have any. Either way, click on the Add Guest Collection button on the right.

Step 4 - You may need to provide Autthentication/Consent. This will likely only happen the first time. Click continue. Authenticate again if necessary.

Step 5 - Fill in the form. Leave Directory alone, and give the collection a name. Provide a description and keywords if you choose. Click Create Collection.

Step 6 - Click Add Permissions - Share With on the right side

Step 7 - In the form that appears, leave Path alone, and leave Share With alone as well. In the Username or Email search for the name or email the recipient. Click on the entry for the person you want to share with. Their name WILL NOT be here if they do not have an account.

Step 8 - Once the name is set, you can write a message and send an email.

Step 7 - Click the write checkbox if you want the recipient to be able to write to the share.

Step 9 - Click Add Permission.

Outcome

The recipient now can download your files.
