Summary
The purpose of this article is to document and clarify the naming convention standards for institutionally-owned computing devices at USNH.

Why do we use a standard naming convention?
Standard naming conventions ensure that ETS professionals are able to use logic to quickly search for and identify devices in our management platforms and provide timely support as needed.
Standard naming ensures that our hardware asset database contains correct information for each device that we manage and support, and that there are no duplicate records in our database due to reuse of common names or locations. Duplicate records with the same name can lead to confusion regarding which device is needing support and result in wasted time and less prompt support.
What is our standard naming convention?
The correct format for naming computing devices at USNH is the first initial of the institution's name, followed by a dash and the serial number.
Examples of correct computer names:
UNH & USNH Systems Office: U-1AB234C
PSU: P-1AB234C
KSC: K-1AB234C
Computers should not be named with any other convention; including location information, end user name, usage (loaner), instrumentation name, or common names/ nicknames. Location information should be stored in the hardware asset record for all computing devices.
Examples of incorrect computer names:
FROGGER1
LAB-1234567
RUDMAN145
JBRULOTTE
GEMMA'S MACBOOK PRO
