Microsoft Licensing: Installing/Logging into Microsoft Office

Summary

This article provides instructions on how to download and install Microsoft Office on your personal computer.

Important: Microsoft changed their licensing terms in March 2024 so only currently active Students, Faculty, and Staff have permission to install Microsoft Office apps on their personal devices.  See details in our article: Microsoft Licensing: M365 License Change effective March 2024

How-To

Microsoft Office 365 is available for installation on personal devices by currently active USNH Students, Faculty, and Staff only.

Note: If you already have Microsoft Visio or Microsoft Project installed, please check with the Technology Help Desk team before upgrading.

Task: To install Microsoft Office 365 on your Personal Computer.

Instructions

Step 1 - In a web browser on the computer where you want to install Microsoft Office 365, go to https://portal.office.com and sign in if necessary.

  • If prompted by Microsoft to Pick an account, be sure the account you choose has your username@usnh.edu (fully qualified username, e.g. jbd2519@usnh.edu) and click Next. If Pick an account shows your campus email address, choose "Use another account" instead.
  • If a generic Microsoft Sign in screen asks for your "Email, phone, or Skype", enter your username@usnh.edu (fully qualified username, e.g. jbd2519@usnh.edu) and click Next.
  • On the USNH Enter Password page, enter your password and click Sign In.
  • If required, verify your identity with one of your multi-factor authentication (MFA) sign-in methods.

Step 2 - You will see the Microsoft 365 Portal Page with "Welcome to Microsoft 365".  Click on the "Install apps" button in the upper right, then choose "Microsoft 365 apps".

Step 3 - This will begin the process of downloading a file to install the Microsoft 365 Office apps.

  • The executable file will auto-save to your downloads folder (unless you have changed the location of downloaded files).
  • Follow the instructions in the pop up (image may vary slightly from what is here in this article).
  • If you need additional help installing, click the "Need Help?" link at the bottom of the pop up window.

Step 4 - After the Installer has finished, open the Microsoft Word app and Sign In with your username@usnh.edu (fully qualified username, e.g. jbd2519@usnh.edu)

Outcome

Microsoft Office 365 has been installed on your Personal Computer.
