Summary
This article has instructions for how to re-use an image in more than one article in the TeamDynamix Knowledge Base (TDx KB). This article is for people who create and edit articles in the USNH TDx KB.
The process has two parts. First, you need to find the image you want to re-use in an existing article in our USNH TDx KB and capture the image's URL. Second, you use that URL in the Image Properties in the other article where you want the image to appear.
The process is slightly different, depending on whether the image is an uploaded image or a pasted image. Instructions for both are given below. See Knowledge Base: Fixing Fuzzy or Small KB Images for additional information about these two methods of using images.
| Important: Only use this process for images already found in the USNH TDx KB. Do not point to external images stored outside of the KB, as those URLs can change based on external events which "breaks" the image in the TDx KB and can be unrecoverable. Always upload or paste an image directly into your article unless you are following the steps below to re-use an image. |
How-To
Task: Re-Use an image from one article in another article
Instructions
Find and Capture the URL of the Image You Want to Use
Step 1 - View the article that has the image you want to re-use. Do not go into edit mode for this article.
Step 2 - Click on the image (single, normal click) to test what type of image it is.
- If nothing happens, it is an uploaded image. Proceed with Step 3 below.
- If the image (thumbnail) opens into a full-size Image Viewer, it is a pasted image. Click the "View Image" button at the bottom of the Viewer and jump to Step 4 below.
Step 3 - Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (MacOS) on the image and choose Open Image in New Tab from the context menu.
Step 4 - On the tab with the image, copy the URL of the image from the browser address bar.
Note that the page title of the tab with the image shows the size of the image in pixels, e.g. "Viewer (713x149)"

Use the Image URL in Another Article
Step 5 - Open the article where you want to re-use the image. Click Edit Article to go into edit mode.
Step 6 - Click on the Image button in the middle toolbar.

Step 7 - Paste the URL into the URL field at the top of the "Image Info" tab, then click into the Alternative Text box. The Width and Height boxes will fill in with the image's original size values.

Step 8 - Type a description of the image into the Alternative Text field to assist users who cannot see the image and use screen readers.
Step 9 - Make sure the padlock symbol is locked (closed), then adjust the Width value to the desired round number smaller than the original width.
- Maximum width that fits in the TDx KB in any browser is 700.
- Maximum that fits on mobile in portrait mode is 300.
- Never make the width larger than the original or the image will be out of focus and fuzzy.
Step 10 - Type 1 in the Border field.
Step 11 - Leave the Alignment field "<not set>", otherwise text will not wrap correctly.
Step 12 - Click OK to save the image into your article.
Example of Image Properties
Example for the image in Step 6 above with elements marked that you fill in.
- The URL is filled in (though not completely visible in the field).
- Alternative Text is filled in.
- Padlock is locked and Width is set to 700 (the max that fits in TDx KB). Note that the original was 713 wide, so this value is less than the original.
- Border is 1.
- Alignment field is "<not set>" so text will wrap correctly.

Outcome
You are able to re-use an image from one article into another article.
