MediaSpace: Embedding Media in a Web Page or Powerpoint

Summary

MediaSpace allows users to upload, manage, and share media. This article describes how to embed media in a web page or Powerpoint in MediaSpace.

How-To

One means of sharing media items is by embedding them within a web page, a post to a blog, or on social media. Embedding the item, unlike just providing a link to the media will mean that the media is displayed as part of the content of the page.

Note: While Powerpoint 2016 also accepts embed codes, it is not recommended to embed video in slides. It is not always reliable, and we still recommend that you link to your video in MediaSpace using the video's page url.

To embed a media item in your web page, you must first upload it to MediaSpace and have it in your My Media collection.

Task: To embed media via oEmbed

Instructions

Step 1 - On your My Media page, locate the item you wish to embed, and click on its title to view that item.

Step 2 - The media item must be set to be Unlisted or published to a Public channel for oEmbed to work. From the Actions menu, select + Publish. If the media item is set to Private, change it to Unlisted and click the Save button. (You can also publish it to a Public channel instead of making it Unlisted, but Unlisted is simpler in most cases.)

Step 3 - Click the Share button below the media item:

Step 4 - Click the oEmbed button to display the oEmbed code for the media item. It will only be a one line URL.

Step 5 - Copy the provided URL.

Step 6 - Within the appropriate location in your web page, paste in the oEmbed code. Exactly how this will be supported will vary from platform to platform. You may just need to paste in the URL directly. You might need to click a button to specifically add an oEmbed media item. Within myPages or Drupal-based websites at UNH, use the Media browser function to create a new Web media item. See the documentation for your web platform for details.

Note: that by posting the oEmbed code in your website, you are making the media item available to all of the Internet. If you wish to block oEmbed functions for that media item in the future, change the publishing settings in MediaSpace so that the video is no longer Unlisted or in a Public channel.

Outcome

Your media has been successfully embedded using oEmbed code.

Task: To Embed via Traditional Embed Codes

Instructions

Step 1 - On your My Media page, locate the item you wish to embed, and click on its title to view that item.

Step 2 - Click the Share button below the media item:

Step 3 - Click the Embed button to display the embed code for the media item.

Step 4 - Optionally, pick choices for the Player Skin and Player Size to be used.

Step 5 - Select the entire block of text shown that starts with <iframe id="kaltura_player". Copy it via the CTRL-C/CMD-C shortcut or the Edit menu of your browser.

Step 6 - Within the appropriate location in your web page, paste the code. You may have to switch to an editing mode that allows you to see the HTML for the page instead of a WYSIWYG edit. Be sure you do not make any modification to the code.

Note: the warning that by copying and posting the embed code in your website you are making the media item available to all of the Internet, regardless of whether the item is set to be Private or not within MediaSpace.
