MS Teams: Clearing Cache in Microsoft Teams

This article describes how to purge the Teams cache in both the Windows and Mac installed app. Sometimes you need to purge the contents of your cache to increase the speed of the application allowing the application to function properly.

Purging the contents of an applications cache can increase the speed of an application, or allow the application to function properly. These instructions explain how to purge Microsoft Teams cache in both the Windows and Mac operating systems.

To clear your Microsoft Teams cache, delete temporary and saved files from your computer using the instructions provided.  

Note: If these instructions do not solve your issue, disable the GPU Hardware Acceleration option using the instruction provided below.

How-To

Task: To clear your Windows Teams cache.

To clear your Microsoft Teams cache, delete the files from within the following folder located on your computer C: > Users > "your name" > AppData > Roaming > Microsoft > Teams using the instructions provided.

Note: If these instructions do not solve your issue, disable the GPU Hardware Acceleration option using the instruction provided below.

Instructions:

Step 1 - Exit Teams.

Step 2 - Press the Windows Key + R.

Step 3 - In the pop-up window, type  %appdata%  then press Enter.

Step 4 Navigate to Microsoft > Teams. Once in the directory, delete all the files and folders within the following folders:

  • Application Cache
  • blob_storage
  • Cache
  • databases
  • GPUCache
  • IndexedDB
  • Local Storage
  • tmp

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 5 - Once this step is complete, restart your computer.

 

Outcome

Your Microsoft Teams chat cache is deleted.

Task: To clear your Mac Teams cache.

Step 1 - Exit Teams.

Step 2 - Delete files in following folders.

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Application Cache/Cache
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/blob_storage
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Cache
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/databases
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/GPUCache
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/IndexedDB
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Local Storage
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/tmp

Step 3 - Restart Microsoft Teams.

 

Outcome

Microsoft Teams cache is deleted.

Disabling the GPU hardware acceleration option is another common solution for teams running slowly, or not responding to user input.

Task: To disable the GPU hardware acceleration option.

 

Instructions

Step 1 - Open Teams.

Step 2 - Open the Setting menu.

Step 3 - Select the General tab, and scroll down to Applications.

Step 4 - Check the Disable GPU Hardware Acceleration option.

Outcome

GPU Hardware Acceleration is disabled.
